The combustion process that powers modern vehicles can create toxic gases. These gases pass through a catalytic converter prior to being emitted in order to help reduce their toxicity and eliminate environmental contamination. Ensuring that your vehicle's catalytic converter is working properly is essential when it comes to  keeping your vehicle running cleanly.

Here are three tips that you can use to ensure your catalytic converter remains in good working condition well into the future.

1. Inspect your exhaust system regularly,

In order to keep your catalytic converter working properly, you need to ensure that your vehicle's exhaust system as a whole remains in good condition. It's not uncommon for leaks to appear within the pipes that transfer gaseous emissions from your vehicle's engine to the catalytic converter.

These leaks can cause temperatures within the catalytic converter to rise, resulting in premature damage. Be sure that you are taking the time to inspect your exhaust system for signs of damage on a regular basis in order to prevent exhaust leaks from compromising the performance of your catalytic converter over time.

2. Make sure fuel injectors are working properly.

When your vehicle is functioning properly, fuel injectors release the correct amount of fuel into your engine chamber to ignite the combustion process. Faulty fuel injectors can release too much fuel, which will allow raw fuel to find its way into your catalytic converter.

When raw fuel is present in your catalytic converter, serious damage can occur. Be sure that you are having an experience mechanic evaluate the performance of your fuel injectors regularly. Replace any malfunctioning fuel injectors immediately to prevent irreparable damage to your catalytic converter.

3. Address antifreeze leaks immediately.

It's important that you are taking the time to monitor your antifreeze if you want your vehicle's catalytic converter to function properly. When antifreeze leaks into the combustion chamber, this antifreeze will eventually find its way into your vehicle's catalytic converter.

The antifreeze will coat the interior surface of the catalytic converter, compromising its ability to effectively scrub toxic gases from your vehicle's emissions. Spotting and eliminating antifreeze leaks immediately will help you preserve the function of your catalytic converter in the future.

Being able to properly maintain your catalytic converter will ensure that your vehicle runs efficiently over time. Look for exhaust leaks, replace faulty fuel injectors, and address antifreeze leaks quickly to keep your catalytic converter running properly.
